New Ohio Concussion Legislation: HB 143

  • Purpose: protect youth athletes at risk for concussion
  • Requires all youth coaches and referees to complete concussion-related education program
  • Mandatory education for parents and student athletes (scholastic based sports)
  • Requires coach or official to remove any athlete suspected of sustaining a concussion from play
  • Prohibits any athlete from returning to play on the same day after being removed with suspected concussion
  • Requires clearance by a physician or licensed healthcare provider prior to RTP
  • Goes into effect April 26th, 2013
